German Roots in Pennsylvania's Present

Fryburg was named for Freiburg, Germany – where many of its skilled workers emigrated following the Revolutionary War and into the 19th century. St. Michael’s Church (of the St. Joseph’s parish) in 1882, the Washington House (circa 1879), and various homes are remnants of that distant past, with the oldest having been built in 1844.

Investment in Industry

Originally, the area of Fryburg was committed to the Holland Land Company in 1792 from the state of Pennsylvania. German was the mother tongue for some time. The iron industry was at its peak, noticeably through the surrounding area’s furnaces that shipped off to Pittsburgh.
