Foxburg's Beginnings
Foxburg is named for the Fox family, who have roots in the region dating back to the purchasing of land by Samuel Mickle Fox around 1790. Thanks to his son, Joseph, little did the Fox family know that they would be setting a precedent with the Foxburg Country Club being the oldest in continuous use in the United States from 1887 and on. The course is known for its history of hickory golfing, its lamp gifted from St. Andrews, and its tee boxes, which were the cornerstones of hickory golf. This development eventually laid the groundwork for Pennsylvania to be a golfing haven, eventually bringing the PGA Open and Governor’s Cup to Western PA.
A Developing Main Street
Not long afterwards, Foxburg felt the effects of the nearby oil boom, which brought to it a railroad and prospectors. Other mainstay shops on Foxburg’s main street include the Red Brick Gallery & Gift Shop, formerly the Fox Estate Oil and Farming business; the Foxburg Free Library, which formed in 1909; the Foxburg Inn resides where the original structure stood before burning down in 1883.
Then & Beyond
Today, the RiverStone Estate, once the mansion & home of the Fox family from 1828 and on, is now slated to be home to Six Senses, a luxury resort group focused on finding peace and relaxation in the most beautiful places in the world. The Governor’s Cup, revived in 2025, pulls in PGA golfers and political figures, like the state governor, to compete at a historic landmark that has defined not only the state, but national culture.
